Connection Starts with ‘Hello’

We’ve all been there. Sometimes, starting a conversation with a stranger can be daunting. Everyone seems busy, absorbed in their own devices, and a genuine, real interaction can pass in the blink of an eye. Yet, the foundation of any human connection, big or small, often begins with one simple word: ‘hello.’

It might seem like an obvious step, but in our increasingly digital world, the power of a simple ‘hello’ can be overlooked. What I’ve always found interesting (to say the least!) is that we have no issues communicating from a distance, whether that be through a device or e-communication, but the simple act of acknowledging the person standing right in front of us is dwindling away like the wind. Together, WE need to change that, for the good of humanity.

Let’s take a look at a real-life scenario that we all experience. You’re waiting in an elevator and someone you’ve never met before walks in. A simple ‘good morning’ or ‘hello’ can change the interaction and even make them feel that warm fuzzy feeling. Why? Because it’s human.  A simple ‘hello’ can break the tension and create a more comfortable space – I urge you to try it the next time you’re in an elevator.

Saying ‘hello’ is more than just a formality – it’s a basic statement and an invitation for connection. It demonstrates a lot of things – it shows that you’re present, it shows that you’re aware of those around you, and it shows that you are willing to put yourself out there to make a human connection – something that is uncommon nowadays. The person you say ‘hello’ to might be having a bad day, and your 10-second interaction could offer them a moment of peace.

There’s a lot of beauty that resides in the word ‘hello’, and even more beauty in the act of saying it. It requires no effort at all, and yet has such a large impact on not just you, but the person you’re interacting with. Who knows where the interaction can lead – that’s the exciting part. Saying ‘hello’ signals openness and a willingness to learn and engage, even for a brief moment.

So, here’s some homework for you. The next time you have the opportunity, try initiating a conversation with a simple ‘hello. It’s a small step, but one that can lead to many opportunities, conversations and even more connections. It’s time to unleash that inner extrovert that we all have and form more bonds. In an increasingly lonely world, make a connection by simply saying ‘hello’ – and together, let’s change the way we connect, one greeting at a time.
